Hands-On-Greater Phoenix Serv-A-Thon

It is a known fact that all across the country there are children living in poverty. Some of those children do not even have the opportunity to go to school, but for those who do; the mere act of fresh paint on the walls can make a huge difference for them.

The Funds Transfer Alliance teamed up with Hands On Greater Phoenix, a local non-profit that puts together volunteer programs across Phoenix, for the 2010 Serv-A-Thon to help spruce up Starshine Academy in inner-city Phoenix. Starshine services an at-risk community with a holistic approach to education, focusing on mind, body, spirit, health, wealth, and happiness and firmly believe the world will be saved by growing the unique talents of every child.

We got the opportunity to help spruce up the bathrooms and walkways with fresh paint, and helped finish a ribbon mural out on the field. It was a lot of hard work, but we managed to have some fun too!

Assistant Principal, Laura Mohamed, had this to say, "I just want to thank you all; this means a lot to our students. I wish that I had a hidden camera to email you guys. When they walk on campus and things have happened like that for them it's very exciting. Thanks for giving up your Saturday morning for these kids that you have never even met. It's great!"

What did the participants have to say about the event?

Our HR Director, Lily, thought that it was "Really exciting to think about them coming in and seeing the star mural finished," while our receptionist, Kirsti, thought the best part of the experience was "doing something for someone other than yourself."

Krystal, from our Risk Analysis Department, thought is was exciting to help because "some of these inner city kids only have school to escape from whatever is going on at home." Danalee from the Merchant Support Department agreed, and also enjoyed "working with everyone", not only in her department, and "really coming in as a team and helping children we have never met." Thank you, Team FTA, for your help and supporting this great cause!
